Dean Castle
Standing in Kilmarnock is the Dean Castle with its 3-storey 14th century tower on the left and a 15th century palace block and tower on the right.

About 1460 it was built by the powerful Boyd family who had strong connections with James III and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The castle was later destroyed by fire and abandoned and in 1828 passed to Lord Howard de Walden. He faithfully set about restoring the old keep to its original condition and in 1975 it was donated to the people of Kilmarnock.

Dean Castle and Country Park is open to the public throughout the year and the castle itself now houses an interesting museum and is also surrounded by an attractive public park.
